Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course
The Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course is the final formal training stage in the Nautical Institute DP Operator certification scheme.
This course builds on practical sea time and onboard familiarization completed after the Dynamic Positioning Induction Course.
Course Structure
The Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course runs for five days and includes intensive simulator-based training.
Training focuses on:
- Dynamic Positioning Simulator watchkeeping
- Operational planning and risk assessment
- Critical operations management
- DP capability analysis
- FMEA application in operations
- Power management under failure conditions
- Drive off and drift off scenarios
- Position reference loss
- Blackout recovery
- Thruster and bus failures
- Environmental stress scenarios
- Incident response and decision making
Training scenarios simulate real offshore conditions. Trainees must demonstrate structured decision-making, effective bridge resource management, and correct use of DP documentation.
Assessment
The course includes a formal assessment in accordance with Nautical Institute standards. Candidates must demonstrate operational competence and system understanding.
Learning Outcome
After successful completion of the Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course and required sea time, candidates may apply to the Nautical Institute for a DP Operator Certificate.
Requirements
To attend the Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course, candidates must:
- Hold a valid Basic DP Course certificate
- Complete the required onboard DP sea time as defined by the Nautical Institute
- Maintain an up-to-date DP logbook
- Meet STCW certification requirements

Monthly Course Schedule
We conduct both Dynamic Positioning Induction and Dynamic Positioning Simulator Courses monthly to ensure regular intake and flexible scheduling.
Each session maintains controlled class sizes to ensure quality instruction, structured simulator access, and proper performance assessment.
Dynamic Positioning is a safety critical role. The Nautical Institute pathway exists to ensure structured competence development. Our training centre delivers each stage in strict alignment with these standards.
