Dynamic Positioning Revalidation Course

The Dynamic Positioning Revalidation Course is designed for certified Dynamic Positioning Operators (DPOs) who are required to maintain the validity of their certification under the standards set by the Nautical Institute.

Dynamic Positioning is a safety-critical function, and revalidation ensures that DPOs maintain current operational competence, stay aligned with evolving industry standards, and continue to operate DP systems safely and effectively.

This course provides structured refresher training focused on operational best practices, risk management, and incident prevention, ensuring continued professional competence in DP operations.

  • Nautical Institute Compliance

From 2024 onwards, the Nautical Institute requires DPOs to demonstrate both Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and recent DP sea time to revalidate their certification.

To revalidate a DP certificate, candidates must meet one of the following pathways:

Pathway 1 (Experience + CPD Route)

    • Minimum 150 DP sea time days, AND
    • Completion of an NI-accredited CPD programme, AND
    • Successful completion of the NI Revalidation Online Examination

    Pathway 2 (Course Route)

    • If the candidate has less than 150 DP sea time days,
    • They must complete an NI DP Revalidation Course

  • Course Structure

The DP Revalidation Course is designed to refresh and strengthen operational knowledge required for safe DP watchkeeping.

    Training focuses on:

    • Refresher of DP operational principles and system limitations
    • DP watchkeeping standards and best practices
    • Operational planning and risk assessment
    • Failure modes and effects awareness
    • DP incident case studies and lessons learned
    • Emergency response procedures
    • Human factors and bridge resource management
    • Updates to industry guidelines and Nautical Institute standards
    • Training includes scenario-based discussions and operational analysis to reinforce decision-making and situational awareness.

  • Course Duration

The course is delivered over 5 days (minimum 30+ hours of structured training), consistent with Nautical Institute-approved course frameworks for DP revalidation training.

  • Pre-Requisite Requirements

To attend the DP Revalidation Course, candidates must:

    • Hold a valid or expired DP Operator Certificate issued by the Nautical Institute
    • Have DP sea time or operational experience recorded in a DP logbook
    • Meet applicable STCW certification requirements
    • Require revalidation due to insufficient sea time or CPD compliance
  • Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Refresh and apply current DP operational standards and best practices
    • Demonstrate improved decision-making during DP operations
    • Understand recent DP incidents and apply lessons learned to prevent recurrence
    • Reinforce knowledge of system limitations and failure modes
    • Enhance situational awareness and bridge resource management
    • Meet the training requirements for DP certificate revalidation under Nautical Institute guidelines
  • Who Should Attend

This course is intended for certified Dynamic Positioning Operators (DPOs) who:

    • Require revalidation of their DP certification
    • Do not meet the sea time or CPD requirements under the Nautical Institute scheme
    • Seek to refresh their operational competence and maintain compliance with industry standards

The Dynamic Positioning Maintenance Course provides technical training for engineers and technical personnel responsible for maintaining and supporting Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems onboard DP vessels. This course focuses on the technical architecture, maintenance requirements, and troubleshooting procedures associated with DP control systems, sensors, propulsion interfaces, and power management systems.

The training supports engineers and Electro-Technical Officers working on DP vessels by strengthening their understanding of system reliability and equipment performance in offshore operations.

Monthly Course Schedule

We conduct both Basic and Advanced DP Courses monthly to ensure regular intake and flexible scheduling.

Each session maintains controlled class sizes to ensure quality instruction, structured simulator access, and proper performance assessment.

Dynamic Positioning is a safety critical role. The Nautical Institute pathway exists to ensure structured competence development. Our training centre delivers each stage in strict alignment with these standards.
